Lost Souls of the Lost Township: Untold Life Stories of the People Buried in the Davis-Smith Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri

By Paul R. Petersen & David W. Jackson

For at least the last 25 years, an untold number of people have sought the best way to preserve the Davis-Smith Cemetery. .

That one of Jackson County’s handful of Revolutionary War veterans is buried in the Davis-Smith Cemetery is unique in and of itself. But, wait, there’s more. Much more. Imagine the lives of those souls buried in this pioneer graveyard…and the long-forgotten life stories that tell of a time when our own neighborhood was a wilderness opening onto vast, virgin prairies.

This book is organized to focus on the lives (and sometimes tragic deaths) of the people who are buried in the Davis-Smith Cemetery. Interspersed, are incidents and events that transpired during their lifetimes, affecting them and those they knew. Additional background information provides readers with a broader picture of the life and times of the people we seek to memorialize.

It is the wish of many (from neighbors, historians and descendants) that this very small, but extremely unique burying ground may be preserved in-tact, marked, and recognized as an historically significant site, and that it be meaningfully incorporated as an amenity to modern development that is sure to envelope the surrounding area.

Hopefully, future readers enjoying the history presented in this book will applaud those of us who successfully worked together “in-the-now” and in a positive way to provide them the unique opportunity to visit and view a very notable spot in historic Jackson County, Missouri.

With many thanks in advance to those who may make it so...
